A full-width page spans the entire window whereas a fixed-width page spans part of the page.

Blocks in 1789 were designed with the intent to be used on certain page templates. For example, the People Stories block is best suited for full-width pages. For more information on block usage for page templates, reference the block’s Design page.

To set the page template, open the Page tab of the Inspector Panel. The Default page template is the default but if you click on “Default” you will be able to select from a list of the other templates.

Landing Page

For landing pages, think about the overall story you want to use to connect with your audience. This may include calls to action to get your main points of interest across, storytelling blocks to support the page’s goal(s), current news, events to learn more about happenings, and explore more links for other points of interest that help support the main goal(s) of the website. The ordering of the blocks should be based on the most important message that connects first with your audience.

Note: The Landing Intro block is a landing page-specific block you can use to give a brief introduction to the content on the page. The Landing Intro block works best with a featured image.

Example Landing Page

Default template

Content pages should use the Default template, which is automatically set when you create a new page. A content page contains more specific information about a given topic and is typically nested under a landing page (but not always). If a landing page is like a book chapter title, then a content page is like the chapter’s actual content.

Example Default Page

Chaptered Page

A Chaptered Page is a page that can help organize content into digestible bits of content. Visually, a chaptered page can be characterized by having a fixed width and left-hand sidebar with navigation listing the sections of the page (i.e., a page with internal links). Adding an H2 heading block will create a Chapter section and will automatically add that section to the side navigation. All content found on this type of page should be related.

Example Chaptered Page

Parent-Child Page

A parent-child page is a page that can help organize large bits of content into separate pages. Note that all content found on these types of pages should be related and organized based on your main audience(s). Similar to the chaptered page, a parent-child page has sidebar navigation to help users navigate through the child (and grandchild) pages. For child pages to appear in the sidebar navigation, you’ll need to make sure they have a parent page set. Both the Parent and Child (and Grandchildren) pages need to use the Parent-Child page template to show the sidebar. However, a page can still have a parent if they aren’t using the Parent-Child page. It just won’t have the sidebar navigation.

Note: If your site has an extensive page hierarchy and what to display it, reach out to Web Services to see if the option to show Great-Grandchildren pages in the sidebar navigation is appropriate for you. If so, Web Services will turn on that setting for your site.

Example Parent-Child Pages

Post Filter

The Post Filter template allows you to create a filterable page for either Posts or Profiles. This template can be used to create a filterable News or Faculty/Staff page. Visually, a Post Filter page can be characterized by having a fixed width and filtering options on the left-hand side. Setting the page template to Post Filter will add the Filtering Settings box to the page editor. From there, you can select to filter by Posts or Profiles.

Post Filtering

To create a Post filtering page:

Select “Posts” as the Post type and add your Filter Title.

Next, select the Posts you want to display by checking the box next to the Categories or Tags you want to pull in.

Decide which terms you want your users to filter content by, and check the appropriate terms under Categories and Tags.

Adjust the custom filters if needed.

Note: Posts created as External Links will not be pulled in with on-site Posts. To include an external post on the Post Filter page, create a new post on your website and add the title, excerpt, featured image, categories, and tags.
