\n\tKaterina Matsa, a research analyst for Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project and a CCT alumna, visited with Professor Meltzer<\/a>’s Critical Studies in Journalism class<\/a> on October 2nd to discuss the findings of the 2013 State of the News Media report. The project, which is in its tenth edition, covers the good, the bad, and the unexpected developments across various media.<\/p>\n

Of the six “major trends of the year” identified in the report, group discussion focused heavily on the effects of years’ worth of newsroom cutbacks—and how consumers are taking notice—and media’s continuing loss of digital ad revenue. As Matsa later concluded, traditional news media is on the decline…but there is some hope, particularly in the positive impact of new technology on changing methods of news consumption (e.g. Smartphones and tablets).<\/p>\n

Matsa also commented on changes readers of the Journalism Project can see in the upcoming months. She explained the project is researching more “topic-based” information than it has previously. There is also a branding change taking place on the website. The session concluded with a Q&A session for students to ask about Pew and also about her experience as a CCT alumna.<\/p>\n
