{"id":368,"date":"2014-02-24T18:50:19","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T23:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.georgetown.edu\/cct\/announcements\/david-lightfoot-to-present-at-aaas\/"},"modified":"2014-02-24T18:50:19","modified_gmt":"2014-02-24T23:50:19","slug":"david-lightfoot-to-present-at-aaas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.georgetown.edu\/2025-02-19_cct\/news-story\/david-lightfoot-to-present-at-aaas\/","title":{"rendered":"CCT Director to present at AAAS annual meeting next week in Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CCT&#x00a0;Director, <a href=\"http:\/\/explore.georgetown.edu\/people\/lightd\/?PageTemplateID=360\">Dr. David Lightfoot<\/a> will be presenting his paper, entitled&#x00a0;<em>Phase Transitions in Language History<\/em>, next week (Feb. 14-18) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/meetings\/\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> annual meeting in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.&#x00a0;Lightfoot&#8217;s paper discusses big structural changes within the biology and evolution of human language as part of the Historical Syntax symposium.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an abstract of his paper:<\/p>\n<p><em>Languages undergo phase transitions, when several surface phenomena change simultaneously. Sometimes linguists can explain why the particular phenomena cluster together and why\/how the phase transition took place when it did. The timing of the shift results from prior changes that re-shaped what children heard and therefore, in a kind of domino effect, triggered a different structure in the systems that children developed.
