This semester, CCT students Fan Wang (\u201821) and Shana Inofuentes (\u201821) received GradGov Research Project Awards (GRPA) to help support their research and professional development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fan Wang intends to use this award in furthering her research on communications and digital messaging strategies between the U.S. and China during COVID-19. This topic is addressed in her master\u2019s thesis, \u201cApplying Social Media as Platforms to Persuade the Public: A Comparative Study on the U.S. and China,\u201d which she successfully presented earlier this month. Over the last semester, Fan has invested ample time in conducting research, utilizing R and Python program languages to collect data from each country\u2019s public health sectors&#8217; official accounts on Twitter and Sina Weibo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fan\u2019s thesis was advised by <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/00336000014RjnnAAC\/jeanine-turner\">Professor Jeanine W. Turner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/00336000014RBCtAAO\/diana-owen\">Professor Diana M. Owen<\/a>. By applying different communications frameworks learned in CCT courses to the gathered data, Fan was able to perform a comparative analysis of the U.S. and China\u2019s messaging tactics, namely their use of the principle of authority. TQP\u2019s language revitalization mission supports rights as defined by the UN\u2019s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The GRPA will be put towards a TQP initiative, supporting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quechuaproject.org\/survey\">\u201cQuechua and Native Languages in the Bolivian DMV\u201d\u00a0survey <\/a>and underscoring Georgetown\u2019s commitment to social justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed with support from <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/00336000014RgDlAAK\/jr-osborn\">Professor J.R. Osborn<\/a> and community consultants, the survey drives the first research of its kind, gathering data about Quechua and other Indigenous languages in Shana\u2019s Bolivian immigrant community of metro Washington, D.C. Specifically, the GRPA will support special outreach to Quechua and Spanish dominant speakers. For accessibility, the survey was published in Quechua, English, and Spanish, and importantly, with Quechua audio. Shana notes that most native Quechua speakers in the community do not read the language, so audio is vital. Outreach will leverage Shana\u2019s intimate knowledge of community social systems and networks of trust.
