{"id":4796,"date":"2022-02-28T12:39:29","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T17:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.georgetown.edu\/cct\/?p=4796"},"modified":"2022-03-01T12:39:05","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T17:39:05","slug":"cct-faculty-evan-barba-and-co-investigators-win-nsf-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.georgetown.edu\/2025-02-19_cct\/news-story\/cct-faculty-evan-barba-and-co-investigators-win-nsf-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Evan Barba and Co-Investigators Win NSF Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of CCT, CCT Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/contact\/00336000014TgdCAAS\/evan-barba\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Evan Barba<\/span><\/a> and his co-investigators, Robin Dillon-Merrill (McDonough School of Business), Uwe Brandes (School of Continuing Studies), and Pete Marra (The Earth Commons Institute, Georgetown University), have been awarded the National Science Foundation\u2019s Sustainable Regional Systems Planning Grant. Dr Barba is Associate Professor within the CCT program, where he teaches courses such as <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/course-catalog\/a1o1Q00000F7k5IQAR\/cctp61701?id=00336000014TgdCAAS\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Interaction Design<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/course-catalog\/a1o1Q00000F7kZ9QAJ\/cctp61101?id=00336000014TgdCAAS\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Systemic Design &amp; UX<\/span><\/a>; this semester, Dr Barba currently teaches courses on <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/course-catalog\/a1o1Q000003RCNaQAO\/cctp61901?id=00336000014TgdCAAS\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Game of Chess<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gufaculty360.georgetown.edu\/s\/course-catalog\/a1o1Q000003RCNaQAO\/cctp61901?id=00336000014TgdCAAS\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sustainability Theory and Practice<\/span><\/a>. His research interests include information &amp; communications technologies and systemic design &amp; computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant examines the current strategies of climate changes from the ground up by engaging stakeholders from across the urban-rural gradient to better understand their knowledge and preparedness for climate change in the region and to build a research coalition to mitigate these effects in the medium term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Barba and his co-investigators\u2019 project focuses on developing an action-oriented network of academic, industrial, governmental, and non-governmental organizations with the reach and expertise to define and parameterize a transition to a sustainable future and to outfit that network with the tools it needs to measure and manage that transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the grant proposal submitted to the NSF, \u201cThe Washington, DC region, given its size and complexity and position within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, provides the ideal case study for a research network to examine the complexities and promise of a sustainable regional systems approach focused on food and water\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another aspect of the project focuses on understanding how multiple stakeholders can achieve equitable regional sustainability and how entities can measure and manage food and water sustainability across complex systems at regional scales from a multiple stakeholder perspective.
