Assistant Professor of Microbiology

The Department of Biology at Georgetown University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall, 2023. Our department welcomes, celebrates, and supports diversity in all forms. Our differences make us stronger as scientists, as individuals, and as a community. We are committed to world-class research and teaching, and we benefit from our close proximity to funding agencies, research institutes, and other universities.

We seek an outstanding microbiologist who will lead a dynamic, externally-funded research program and contribute to the teaching and mentoring of talented undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. We are most interested in individuals with bold ideas who bring disciplinary expertise and who welcome opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration to work on foundational or applied challenges. Individuals whose research focuses on prokaryotes, microbial cell biology, environmental microbiology, extremophiles, or host-microbe interactions will best complement current departmental strengths, but we are open to a wide range of specific research topic foci and approaches. The successful applicant will join a welcoming and vibrant research community both within our department, and with colleagues in other natural and physical science departments and at the adjacent Georgetown University Medical Center. We take pride in our educational programs at both the graduate and undergraduate level, and individuals with a genuine interest in teaching and mentoring will find a supportive community both within our department and across the university.  A Ph.D. in Microbiology or a related discipline is required prior to appointment start date. Candidates are expected to have trained two or more years in a postdoctoral position, and prior teaching or mentoring experience is a plus.

To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF at http://apply.interfolio.com/112380 that includes 1) a curriculum vitae (3-4 pages), 2) a description of prior relevant research training and accomplishments (2-3 pages), 3) a description of a 5-year plan for future research (3-4 pages), 4) a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy (1-2 pages), 5) a DEI statement explaining how the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are reflected in your research, teaching, and/or service (1-2 pages), and 6) a list of three or more references. Review of application materials will begin November 1, 2022.
