Troubleshooting Classroom Technology
CETS First Line Troubleshooting Guide For Faculty, Staff, and Students Using Classroom Technology at Georgetown University
Purpose
This guide is designed to help users quickly identify and resolve common technology issues within General Purpose Classrooms (GPCs) .Following these steps may save time and restore functionality without delay.
Helpful Tips:
- Arrive early to test equipment before class begins.
- Keep spare batteries or adapters if using personal devices.
- Always check the AV panel before assuming equipment is not working.
1. Display Issues
Problem: Projector/Monitor not displaying image
- Ensure the system is powered on.
- Check that your laptop or device is connected to the appropriate cable (HDMI/USB-C).
- Select the correct input source on the AV control panel (e.g., “Laptop HDMI”).
- On your laptop, try pressing Windows + P (Windows) or Command + F1 (Mac) to mirror the display.
- Restart your laptop and reconnect the cable.
2. No Audio Output
Problem: No sound through classroom speakers
- Check volume settings on your device and the AV control panel.
- Make sure the device is not muted.
- If using Zoom or another app, select the correct speaker output in settings.
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting your cable.
3. Microphone Not Working
Problem: Room microphone not amplifying
- Confirm the microphone is turned on and has fresh batteries.
- Try using a different microphone if available.
- For Zoom users, select the correct input microphone in Zoom audio settings.
4. No Internet/Network Access
Problem: Unable to connect to Wi-Fi or wired network
- Confirm you are connected to “GUFacultyStaff” or “eduroam.”
- Restart the device or forget/reconnect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Try another browser or application to confirm network access.
5. Zoom/Teams Not Connecting to Camera or Audio
Problem: Camera/microphone not detected
- Ensure Zoom/Teams has permission to access your camera/mic.
- Select the correct device in Zoom/Teams settings.
- Restart the application or device.
6. BYOD Issues (Bring Your Own Device)
- Ensure adapters are compatible with classroom AV (MacBooks often require USB-C to HDMI).
- Test your device on another port if available.
- Try a different cable or adapter if one is available.
