Consortium Registration


What is the Consortium?

The Washington Metropolitan Area Consortium of Universities is a cooperative arrangement in post-secondary education that is designed to permit the sharing of academic resources by member institutions and to offer qualified students the opportunity to enroll at other institutions for courses not available on their own campus.

The Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, includes:

  • Gallaudet University
  • George Mason University
  • The George Washington University
  • Georgetown University
  • Howard University
  • Marymount University
  • Montgomery College*
  • National Defense University*
  • National Intelligence University*
  • Northern Virginia Community College*
  • Prince George’s Community College*
  • Trinity Washington University
  • Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences*
  • University of the District of Columbia
  • University of Maryland-College Park.

*Please note that Georgetown University does not participate in cross registration with Montgomery College, National Defense University, National Intelligence University, Northern Virginia Community College, Prince George’s Community College, or Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Consortium registration is not guaranteed. Courses may be closed or subject to approval from the dean/department at the visited institution.

Consortium enrollment is on a space-available basis to degree-program students currently enrolled in a Consortium member school visiting another member school. For Links to Consortium standard Cross-Registration rules and procedures, and for more information see the Consortium website.

Consortium for Georgetown Students

Eligibility

Participation in the Consortium program is restricted to main campus degree candidates in good academic standing. Non-Degree students are ineligible to take courses through the Consortium program. For specific eligibility requirements and instructions please refer to your respective school’s Bulletin.

Courses

Courses excluded from Consortium registration include courses for audit or pass/fail, physical education courses, study abroad, non-credit courses, and any individualized course such as independent study, tutorial, directed reading, private music instruction, internship, practicum and student teaching.

Grades

Courses may be taken only for a grade. They may not be taken on an Audit or Pass/Fail basis. Graduating students should alert their instructors that they are graduating and their grades are necessary for graduation clearance.

While consortium courses must be taken for a grade, the grade is not applied to your GPA. You will only receive credit for the course(s) taken.

Registration Procedures

Registration in Consortium courses must be requested on a Consortium Registration Form, available in the Office of the Registrar, in your Dean’s Office, or online. Consortium registration requires approval of your academic advisor and Dean before submitting the form to the Office of the Registrar for final approval and processing. Registration forms must be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar by the end of the Add/Drop period. The visited school will not process Consortium Registration Forms until the General Registration period just prior to the start of classes.

Availability of classes cannot be guaranteed. If the requested course is not full, restricted, or excluded from Consortium you will be registered. If special permission is needed, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain written permission from the instructor and submit it with their consortium request. You will receive email confirmation of your enrollment from the visited institution.  

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for Consortium courses is assessed at the current Georgetown tuition rate and paid to Georgetown. Additional course fees may be charged by the visited institution. Dropped courses are subject to the main campus refund schedule.

Consortium Students Visiting Georgetown

Contact your home university Consortium Coordinator to submit an official Consortium request. If the course(s) you are requesting to take is restricted you must seek written permission from the Georgetown authority (program, department, or instructor) for the course in order to be considered. Provide permission to your home Coordinator with your request and they will forward the form and permission to Georgetown. If the requested course is not full, restricted, or excluded from Consortium, you will be registered and will receive an email confirmation. Consortium students are not permitted to compete for courses via the waitlist.

All consortium registrations will be processed during the Add/Drop period, just prior to the start of the semester. Georgetown will not accept any consortium requests after the Add/Drop deadline at Georgetown.

Excluded Courses: SCS Executive Master of Professional Studies courses (EMPS), online Nursing (NURO) courses, MS Finance online (MSFO) courses, study abroad (SABR) courses, physical education courses, non-credit courses, and any individualized course such as independent study, tutorial, directed reading, private music instruction, internship, practicum, and student teaching.
