My name’s Kirk, and I’m in the SFS majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs, with minors in Computer Science and Spanish. I’m originally from Centennial, Colorado, and I’m loving living on the Hilltop in D.C. My college decision wasn’t always an easy one, but there was just something about Georgetown that kept drawing me back. I knew I was interested in the SFS’ unique combination of a top-notch education and its equally strong commitment to service, and after I came to GAAP weekend, I was confident I could make Georgetown my new home. During those busy two days, I was introduced to enthusiastic potential classmates who brought with them an impressive range of diverse experiences and perspectives, and met professors who challenged me to succeed and whom I now admire greatly. After my first two years as a Hoya, I’ve continued to build close friendships and expand my intellectual horizons. I’ve enriched my college experience by joining clubs: you can find me photographing sporting events and speakers for The Hoya, walking Jack the Bulldog around campus, advocating for students as Chair of the SFS Academic Council General Membership Committee, or exploring D.C. and taking pictures with Hoya Snaps, to name a few. My first two years at Georgetown challenged me academically: I studied everything from National Geographic’s impact on environmental policy, to the deeper meaning of Hamlet, to the plethora of security and global health issues currently playing out in the Arctic. Every step of the way, my professors supported me, believed in me, and helped me find my true potential. I’ve developed close relationships with Georgetown faculty by having dinner at my dean’s house and even snorkeling with my Spanish professor, as we did on a study abroad program in Ecuador. Here on the Hilltop, I’m confident you’ll find new opportunities and be one step closer to achieving your goals. I love Georgetown for all these reasons, and also because we have Jack the Bulldog as a mascot. I’d love to talk to you or try to answer any questions you may have, so please feel free to reach out! I’m a proud North Jersey native, but I always knew I wanted to go to college in a big city, and I fell in love with Georgetown the first time I walked across Healy Lawn. To me, going to Georgetown meant having the amazing culture of DC at my fingertips, from museums and art galleries to opportunities for political engagement, without ever having to sacrifice a beautiful campus and the tight-knit, spirited community that comes with it. But more than anything, the people that I have met at Georgetown have made my experience special. They’re of course smart and ambitious, but they are also incredibly warm and down-to-earth, and the deep friendships I’ve made on campus are what have truly made the Hilltop into a home for me. In addition to GAAP, I edit investigative stories for The Hoya and mentor first-year students with NSO. If I’m not in class or extracurriculars, though, you’ll probably find me exploring the neighborhood with friends, hanging out in the art studios, or watching some Hoya basketball at Capital One Arena. I first fell in love with Georgetown as a six year old, when my brother was a student here. Now that I am here, I continue to fall in love more and more with Georgetown every single day, and this love has driven me to invest my time and energy in activities on campus that promote Georgetown in this light. More specifically, after I attended GAAP weekend in Spring 2019, I knew GAAP was an organization I would be very passionate about. In addition to GAAP, I am a tour guide with the Blue and Gray Society, a Marketing intern at our Credit Union GUASFCU (check out those rewards!!), a storyteller for Georgetown Stories (check out the videos on our Youtube page! they’re made for people just like you), a Peer Advisor for students in the College, a player on the Club Softball team, and Secretary of the Irish American Society. I see GAAP as the perfect culmination of everything I love on campus, and I could not be happier to be a member of the Board this year. Overall, Georgetown has become my home away from home and I have grown so much just in my very first year. I have met some of the greatest, most intelligent, accomplished, and driven people here that I know will go on to do amazing and beneficial things with their lives. From the best friends I’ve made and classes I’ve taken, to the unparalleled pre-professional experience I have gained, I will be ready for anything I set my mind to. Georgetown was the perfect combination of the two. From the class discussions with my fellow students, the relationships I’ve built with my professors, and the forever friends I’ve made, Georgetown has truly become my second home. Moving across the country can be difficult, but it’s all of the support I’ve found here that has made Georgetown not just my school, but a community I’m proud to be a part of. During my time here, I participated in the Georgetown Opportunities for Leadership Development pre-orientation program where I made some of my best friends, and I am now a student coordinator for first-year students! I also tutor local high school students in DC through the Center for Social Justice and give tours of our gorgeous campus to prospective students and their families! I’ve loved being involved with GAAP because of the opportunity to share my Georgetown experience and help others start their own! In the two years I’ve been here, I have learned from and been mentored by amazing and accomplished professors, explored the nation’s capital, and grown so much as a student and a person. I think that Georgetown’s Jesuit value of Women and Men for Others is something so unique about our school. All of the professors, students, and members of our community are passionate about using their knowledge and skills for the good of others. Whatever your passion may be, you can surely find a way to pursue it here at Georgetown and use the opportunities you will have to make the world a better place! I’m so grateful for my Georgetown experience, from the days spent on the waterfront, to cheering on our basketball team at Capital One Arena, and the late nights laughing and studying with friends. When I started applying to colleges, I never could have imagined how lucky I would be to end up on the Hilltop. I was one of those students who applied to 15+ schools and had never visited any of them. When I got into Georgetown and attended GAAP weekend, I knew right away it was the school for me. Every person I talked to was super excited about the school and willing to bring me into the Hoya family. I am also an MSB Writing Fellow, where I tutor and assist fellow business students with their papers. I am an MSB Peer Ambassador as well and mentor freshmen to help them adjust to life on the Hilltop. I also am on the marketing strategy team for The Corp, which manages coffee shops and convenience stores all across campus. With that being said, there are so many different clubs and organizations on campus to get involved in! While I definitely love the Northwest and think it’s one of a kind (you all should definitely visit!), the other Washington (DC!) has truly become my second home. If I could sum up all of the amazing things about Georgetown, it would be opportunity. Whether it be on campus or off, going to school on the Hilltop has provided many unique experiences and interactions you just wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else! Throughout all of the programs at Georgetown there are many amazing and distinguished faculty that truly care about their students and desire to see them learn. There are also many ways to expand your interests and/or ambitions through many of the volunteer and internship opportunities at Georgetown and in DC! Georgetown’s location is also the perfect combination of a traditional college-campus feel within an urban setting. D.C. is an awesome city to explore with so many different sights and unique neighborhoods. Not to mention going to restaurants and coffeeshops (like a true Pacific Northwestern native). Going on these adventures (visiting 50+ coffeeshops) has taken me all over the city and showed me all of the places you have access to just by being at Georgetown! Finally, I can’t express enough the endless opportunities on the Hilltop alone, there is truly a club or organization for everyone! You will never run out of things to do between all of the interesting speakers and exciting club events that happen every week! In addition to being on the GAAP Board, I’m also active in campus ministry, specifically Campus Outreach and the board of the Protestant Student Association. I’m also a part of Hoyas Inspire Language Learners that helps teach foreign languages to elementary school students and I work for Student Centers on campus! Don’t get me wrong, moving across the country to Georgetown was a very difficult transition, but looking back on my first two years, it’s hard to stop myself from continuing to talk about Georgetown! The students at Georgetown are like no other; everyone is highly dedicated, intelligent, passionate, worldly, kind, and so open to getting to know everyone they cross paths with. I have learned a great deal about life, myself, and the world through the special friendships I have cultivated at Georgetown. I have met most of these amazing people through the clubs I participate in, like the MSB Technology Center where I help MSB students, faculty, and MBAs with any and all software and hardware issues. I serve as the COO for Smart Women Securities, an all-female investing club that equips undergraduate women in business with the tools to succeed and Acting Outreach Director for Georgetown University TV, a club where we create/discuss/watch films. My name is Louis Kaldas and I am in the McDonough School of Business class of 2023. I am majoring in International Business and hope to work in the airline industry after college. My choice of study reflects my upbringing as I spent most of my childhood between Europe and North America. I attended school in Salzburg and Vienna, Austria as well as Green Bay, Wisconsin before coming to the hilltop. Hence, I understand what it must be like to come to Georgetown from both an international and a domestic background. When I was applying to college I researched and visited a variety of different schools. While in high school I had the pleasure of touring the Georgetown campus. A couple months before I started freshman year, I also attended GAAP weekend. Both visits helped me realize the distinctiveness of the university in comparison to others. It became clear to me that instead of merely receiving an academic education as a Hoya, one is immersed in a singular and holistic four-year adventure. On the hilltop one experiences being part of a diverse and genuinely inviting community, being taught by pioneers in their respective fields, living in a city that yields opportunities in countless different sectors, joining unique student organizations and clubs, and so much more. Getting to know your peers especially, will be the epitome of your Georgetown experience. Whether it be to collaborate on projects, study together, explore DC, make late night runs to Insomnia Cookies (a great cookie shop in Georgetown, open until 3am), or have breakfast together before class, you will find pleasure in being with the people around you. Likely you will uphold these valuable relationships for the rest of your life. Your initial time at the university will thus lead to formative, impactful, and special four years. I look forward to welcoming you to the hilltop soon. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. My name is Abby Malarkey, and I’m from “outside Philly” in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. I’m a junior in the College, studying Math and minoring in Spanish. Coming into college, I had no idea what I wanted to study. I knew that I wanted a liberal arts education so that I could explore all different fields before deciding which one(s) was right for me. Georgetown was the perfect decision, as I can pursue being a math nerd while also studying Spanish, and at the same time, be able to participate and learn in Georgetown’s enthusiastic political environment in the heart of DC. My feelings were cemented after GAAP weekend, where I could feel that my future Georgetown peers were as excited to welcome me to campus as I was to be there. During my time at Georgetown, some of my favorite moments have included listening to Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker speak at MSNBC’s Climate Forum and attending Nancy Pelosi’s take on the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, both held in our very own Gaston Hall! Outside of my classes and GAAP, I serve as a Commissioner on the Student Activities Commission (SAC), I co-lead the Space Health team for Georgetown University Space Initiative (GUSI), I table for H*yas for Choice, I am on the board of STEMME (Georgetown Women in STEM), and I’m a TA for the Math Department. During my free time, I absolutely love exploring everything DC has to offer. Whether it be studying in the Library of Congress, visiting museums, walking the monuments, trying new restaurants, or giving up the Phillies’ longtime feud with the Nats to attend the World Series parade, there is never a boring moment. On campus, my best days include enjoying a fresh honeycrisp apple on Copley Lawn with my friends at the Wednesday Farmers Markets. I’d love to get to know you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out!
