The Vannevar Group

Gain real-world science policy experience - and make a difference.

The Vannevar Group advocates for implementing good-faith science policy solutions that work towards accessibility for all, transparency between scientists and the public, and creates positive changes for the public good.

Named for engineer-administrator Vannevar Bush, the Vannevar Group is a science policy advocacy group that brings together students in Georgetown’s Biohazardous Threat Agents & Emerging Infectious Diseases and Biomedical Science Policy & Advocacy programs. Students participate in the group through the Spring required course BSPA/BHTA 6562, with each cohort choosing areas of focus and initiatives to pursue. The Vannevar Group not only gives students practical experience, but also makes an impact in the community.

Our projects have included:

  • Promoting cultural competence in healthcare in the United States
  • Advocating a medically tailored meals program for veterans
  • Investigating the effects of social media exposure on adolescents
  • Supporting ethical cobalt mining through import standards
  • Targeting biases that hinder the equitable availability of PrEP medication
  • Advancing the cause of data privacy for genetic data
