The following are postings of employment and internship opportunities locally, nationally, and globally that individuals and companies have forwarded to the Department of Biology with the request that the information be made available to Biology students.

Please also note that a resource book containing information on Post-Graduation and Undergraduate Opportunities for Biology students is also now available to view in the Department of Biology main office, located in Reiss 406. The TEACH Charlotte program is currently seeking outstanding candidates to teach science, and other subjects in the Charlotte, NC area. This program provides an accelerated pathway into teaching for accomplished professionals and recent college graduates who aren’t yet licensed as educators, but who possess the dedication and content knowledge to teach in some of Charlotte’s highest-needed schools. The training program includes pre-service training (7 week program) and the TNTP Academy (1 year licensing program, while you work as a full-time teacher in the classroom). The Center of Excellence for Health Disparities in the Nation’s Capital in collaboration with GHUCCTS has released the 2015 Summer/Fall Opportunity for Achievement in Research (SOAR). The research internships are specialized didactic and mentored summer-long and academic semester programs designed to provide undergraduates an opportunity to engage in research related to minority health and health disparities and clinical and translational research. Research interns will receive a stipend. Students interested in applying should submit a completed online application, official college transcript, and three letters of recommendation. Frog Tutoring is currently seeking part-time tutors who can work with students in the Washington, DC area. Tutors will be able to choose the grade levels and subjects they would like to tutor, create their own schedules, and would potentially be eligible for such items as bonuses, incentives, and merit acknowledgement. Environment America has requested that students be notified of fellowship opportunities it currently has available for graduating students and internship opportunities available for undergraduate students. The paid Fellowship Program is a two-year crash course in the nuts and bolts of environmental activism and the type of institution-building that can sustain long-term battles. As a fellow, students are learning how to make an impact and doing so through activities ranging from planning and running grassroots campaigns to building coalitions and lobbying law-makers directly. Internships for undergraduate students also offer a way to learn how to make an impact on critical issues and launch a career in environmental advocacy. The Maryland Sea Grant is currently accepting applications for their Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Ocean Sciences program. Students in this new program can choose to conduct Ocean Science Research at California State University, Monterey Bay in several different areas, including Marine Biology and Ecology, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, and Marine Geology. Students will be provided with a stipend in addition to support for travel, room, and board. Students will also receive post REU support to attend conferences and support in applying to subsequent REU programs or graduate programs. The Haas School of Business at the University of California Berkeley is accepting applications for its BASE Summer Program (Business for Arts, Sciences, and Engineering). BASE is a six-week business boot camp that enables non-business majors to take business courses while earning nine semester units of academic credit. Some former BASE students have gone on to earn MBA degrees, while others have accepted jobs in marketing, product development, consulting, and financial services. The Neuroscience Institute at NYU Langone Medical Center is currently accepting applications from outstanding college graduates for Neuroscience Research Technicians, with positions to begin as early as June. Areas of research include physiology, cognition & behavior, developmental biology, genetics, molecular biology, and systems neuroscience. Technicians generally work in a lab for 1-2 years in preparation for applying to graduate school. The University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering is currently accepting applications for their Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. This REU program allows students completing their Junior year the opportunity to spend summer break working alongside USC’s world-class faculty on cutting-edge research in engineering and computer science. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IMHE) at the University of Washington offers a Post-Bachelor Fellowship (PBF) program that combines a full-time professional position, academic research, and education with progressive on-the-job training and mentoring from a renowned group of professors. This program provides Post-Bachelor Fellows the option to pursue a fully-funded Master of Public Health degree at the University of Washington. Hartford Hospital is currently accepting applications for its Summer Student Pre-Med and Research Program. This program is designed exclusively for pre-medical students completing their junior year in college and offers an introduction to research methodology, patient treatment, and ethical issues in medicine as well as exposure to a broad spectrum of health care providers within a large community teaching hospital. The Broad Institute in Cambridge, MA is now accepting applications for its Summer Research Program in Genomics (SRPG). SRPG is a nine-week research and training experience designed for students with a commitment to biomedical research and an interest in genomics. Students spend the summer in a laboratory at the Broad, engaged in an original research project under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers. The Conte Center for Computational Neuropsychiatric Genomics is offering an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program for the Summer. Stipends will be $4,000 for ten-week projects, and these will be awarded on a competitive basis based on academic excellence, motivation, scientific potential, compatibility of personal interests, and long-term career goals aligned with research programs of the Conte Center. The United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in Fort Detrick, MD is currently accepting applications for its Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Sciences (GEMS) Near-Peer Mentor Summer Internship position for Summer 2014. The goal of the GEMS program is to broaden students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and to inspire them to consider careers in these fields. Responsibilities include supervising students, preparing laboratory materials, working individually with high school leaders and guide interns to advanced classes and assist with college questions, guiding students through course material, etc. The mentor will receive training prior to the start of the program. The National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking exceptional candidates for its Diversity in Vision Research and Ophthalmology (DIVRO) summer internship program. DIVRO offers participants the opportunity to work closely with leading NEI scientists. Training typically begins in May or June of the selection year for 8-12 weeks on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. December 6, 2013: The Section on Bipolar Spectrum Disorders (BSD) at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD seeks qualified individuals to fill Research Assistant positions, with employment starting May/June 2014. BSD conducts research on the pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of childhood mental illnesses, with an emphasis on bipolar disorder and severe irritability (SMD) in children. Research assistants are involved in all aspects of the clinical research process, including analyzing data and interacting with patients. The Maryland Sea Grant is currently accepting applications for their Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Estuarine Science program. This program will run from May 18-August 10, 2014, and all participants will receive a $6,000 stipend in addition to housing and travel support to and from their host institution. This is a great opportunity to conduct research with a mentor and spend a summer by the Chesapeake Bay, and students in several diverse disciplines are encouraged to apply, including those studying biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology, and marine and environmental science. The NASA District of Columbia Space Grant Consortium is accepting applications for their K-12 STEM Educator Program. The goal of this program is to build confidence and knowledge base of students to teach a STEM discipline to K-12 students after graduation. The program is open to current sophomores and juniors majoring in STEM at an accredited DC area college or university, and it contains six very exciting components which students will participate in over the course of approx. 16 months. The Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center is accepting applications for their Academic Associate Internship Program. The West Virginia University Center for Neuroscience continues to cultivate the next generation of neuroscientists with an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in their 9-week Summer Undergraduate Research Internship (SURI) program. Accepted students will gain invaluable experience as they study and work in high-tech facilities across over 40 laboratories housed in modern research facilities. The NOAA Office of Education (OEd) Educational Partnership Program (EPP) and Hollings Scholarship Program are currently accepting applications for their Undergraduate Scholarship Programs.
